Common Gas Furnace Repair Problems

Gas Furnace repair in Toronto These quick guidelines only apply to conventional gas furnaces that have efficiencies of up to 89% AFUE. High efficiency gas furnaces that are 90% AFUE or more function quite differently, and can experience different types of problems.
  1. 1. My furnace is producing no heat. There are a number of possible causes here. Your thermostat may be set very low and is requesting for any heat, your thermostat may be broken, a fuse may have been burnt, the circuit breaker may have tripped, the gas valve may be closed, or your pilot light may be out entirely. First check if your thermostat is set at an appropriate temperature, and then double check to see if it is working right. Try turning the setting up or down to see if it makes any difference. If the circuit breaker is tripped, reset it and see if things start working again. You may also have to replace a burnt fuse or relight the pilot.

  2. 2. My furnace is on, but is barely producing any heat. Is your air filter dirty? Often, this is the cause of the problem. Otherwise, it may be due to dirty gas burners, or the air flow to the combustion chamber may be obstructed. You may have to call in a furnace repair technician to clean and adjust your burners, and to check for any blockages that are minimizing air-flow.

  3. 3. My furnace keeps turning itself on and off. If this is happening more frequently than usual, you may have a problem on your hands. Again, this may be due to a dirty air filter, but other causes include problems with the blower motor, or a malfunctioning thermostat. You may simply have to replace your dirty air filter. If you decide to call in a furnace repair technician, be sure to have them check the thermostat, and to oil the blower motor. Lastly, they should observe the belt tension to make sure that it is in good condition, and is neither too tight nor too loose.

  4. 4. The blower won't stop running. First of all, make sure that your thermostat is not set to have the fan running continuously. You may also have a fan limit switch on the gas furnace, and perhaps this is malfunctioning. You may simply need to change the thermostat's fan setting, or you may need to have a furnace repair technician change the fan limit control switch.

  5. 5. My furnace is making way too much noise. What type of noise are you referring to? If there is a high pitched, squealing sound, this may be caused by the belt or blower motor; they may simply need oiling. If you hear a rumbling sound when the burners are off, your pilot light may need adjusting. However, if there is a rumbling sound when your furnace is on, the burners may need to be cleaned.
